According to Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary “Desire” means to “long or hope for”. That is exactly what I was feeling when I stopped in my local Shutterbug store and talked with the Canon Rep there who was showcasing the new Canon 5D Mark II. Holding this new camera in my hands completely defined desire for me. I’m sure the look on my face was the same as a puppy staring at a dog bone with drool running out of his mouth. I’m pretty sure I wasn’t drooling but I came close. I’m not going to rehash the technical specs on this camera, like the 21MP sensor or the HD video capability, but I will say that it sure felt good in my hands. What didn’t sound so good was the Canon Rep telling me it was about a 6 month wait before he got any more in this area. Sounds like the waiting list is quite long as people who want a smaller frame camera with the capabilities of a 1D series come out of the woodwork to get their hands on it. I guess my “desire” will have to wait a bit longer.

The turkey and all the fixings are now fully digested and the remains of the carcass are awaiting compilation into a turkey sandwich. It’s officially Black Friday and millions are braving the weather and the crowds to find the deal of a lifetime on junk they never knew they needed. Why is it every year some poor sap gets trampled in the mad rush to get through the doors of a Walmart? Are we really so uncaring that we are willing to cause death and injury in order to be the first to grab some cheap junk off the shelf? I’ve never felt the primal calling to stand in line in the dark hours of the morning waiting for the doors of salvation to open and impart the blessings of 50% off. I guess I’m not genetically wired to be an impulse buyer which is the curse I have to bear. Instead I spend weeks if not months tediously researching and comparing features and prices to make sure I get that deal of a lifetime. To those out there that are impulse buyers…I salute your tenacity and resolve in your Black Friday pursuits. Happy Hunting!!
Ever go to shutdown to reboot your PC and find it takes forever due to an application hanging? The default time to kill a process is 20 seconds of precious time. Now that may not seem like a lot but if you are in a hurry to get away from your PC and just want the darn thing to shutdown it can seem like a lifetime. Here is how to reduce that time significantly with a couple of reg hacks. Using regedit…
-
Under HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop, change the values for WaitToKillAppTimeout and HungAppTimeout to 1000 or 2000 (this is in milliseconds)
Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop, change the values for WaitToKillAppTimeout and HungAppTimeout to 1000 or 2000
Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control, change the value for WaitToKillAppTimeout to 1000 or 2000
Use the same numeric values for all 3 registry settings. Now shutting down Windows should be significantly quicker.
The second in a series of shots from the Aufderheide Memorial Drive in Oregon. This one is of French Pete Creek. We followed along the French Pete Trail #3311 into the Three Sisters Wilderness.
Spent a great day out shooting photos along the Aufderheide Memorial Drive, specifically French Pete Creek (It is said that this stream, which is an important tributary of the South Fork McKenzie River, was named for French Pete, an early day sheepherder, who ranged his band in this area) and Roaring River. While most of the leaves are gone the creeks and rivers were still beautiful to shoot. Over the next several days I’ll be posting a few photos as I go through a process them. Hopefully there will be at least a few good ones to share.
Well the election is past and for those of us who voted for Nader it’s time to see this “change you can believe in” from our newly elected President. With all the pre-election talk I was at least hopefully optimistic to see what would happen. But now it seems like the change that was being talked about is a change back to the 90’s and the Clinton era. Let’s see, there is Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State; Rep. Rahm Emanuel, the former Bill Clinton aide who will be Obama’s chief of staff; there is Eric H. Holder Jr who was once the deputy to Janet Reno, and on and on it goes. My guess is that there are more than a few Obama supporters who are a little disappointed to see this administration stacking up so similar to the Clinton administration. Where are the fresh faces, the new talent? I guess it really is true that the more things change the more they stay the same.
I’ve decided that through election day I am not going to watch or listen to any news. I’m going to do a news fast. Sure, I know its what some are calling the most important election of our time but hey, I’ve already cast my ballot and for me it doesn’t really matter which of the two corporate candidates get elected as neither will be given the ability to make the real change needed. Besides, what is it they always say “No news is good news”? I think that saying is even more true today. I mean, take a look at the news that gets reported. It’s rarely positive or uplifting. Instead it concentrates on the negative, the crime, the “what did that crazy celebrity do now” type of news. It’s sensationalistic journalism that sells these days. When CNN spends hours of coverage on Anna Nicole Smiths drug death you know we are in trouble. If you continuously surround yourself in negativity then that is most likely what you will attract.
